24 December 2006all, post location, san francisco, ca, usawhen i was in los angeles and san francisco people liked to ask me what i missed about living there. of course i miss family and friends, and there is a certain convenience that comes from having a level of language fluency that i have in english but don’t yet have in thai. what ireally miss though is the anonymity that I used to have in san francisco. in san francisco, someone can walk around wearing pants with the butt cut out, his cheeks just hanging out for everyone to see … and most people probably will not even notice him. in bangkok if i happen to walk through the mall with some new boy, i’ll hear comments from about 10 people about it within a week. some of this comes from the fact that i have a lot of students and so there are a lot of people that recognize me. i guess i do stick out a bit there too, there aren’t many blond white boys who walk around speaking thai most of the time. it seems to me though that in bangkok there are many more people interested in my life than there ever have been anywhere else. oscar wilde lived in a similar time and he seemed to deal with it by saying “well the only thing worse than having people talk about me, is not having people talk about me”.
you know, as i write this i’m thinking that it’s all a very ironic thing for someone to write about enjoying anonymity and doing it in a very public forum.

15 December 2006all, post location, san francisco, ca, usayesterday mme and i went to the new deyoung museum in golden gate park … the old one was torn down because of seismic problems and the new one was built in the same spot admist typical bay area controversy. herzog and de meuron designed the building and wrapped it completely in copper. right now the exterior is still copper colored but within about 10 years it will all patina and turn this green color making it blend in with all the trees in the park. there is this big observation town that rises nice floors above the museum and provides for views all over san francisco. i lived here during the planning stages and people seemed to really hate the tower, said it looked like a giant cheese greater …. people in san francisco love to bitch and moan tho. the thing obviously got built and i love it.
